Photo(s) of the Week: Last Known Image

The following are the last known photos of Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Anastasia and Tsarevich Alexei, taken aboard the steamship Rus in May 1918 as it ferried them from Tobolsk to Tyumen.

When one thinks of early 20th-century photography one thinks of "hazy" images and ill-defined subjects but the photograph below displays an almost stunning amount of detail and clarity in foreground, background, and subjects.

Photo of the Week: Alternate angle II

It's the second installment of Alternate Angle and today we're looking at the following photo:

The subject is the cluster of people in the center but off to the left stands a lone man holding a small black box: a camera. In the next photo we'll se his perspective:
We see the same cluster of people at a slightly different moment in time, with a camera mounted on a tripod to the right. While I'm no expert on early 20th century photography equipment, I reckon that that is a movie camera, possibly the one that filmed the following clip starting at 1:59:
